Shahar Peer beats Ryoko Fuda to enter the second round – Citi Open 2011
Top-seeded Shahar Peer of Israel won over opposition tennis player Ryoko Fuda of Japan and has entered the second round at Citi Open tennis tournament. Peer fired about six aces in her play and that helped her winning over Japan’s
Fuda by 6-4, 6-2 points.
Former world number eleven and currently ranked 24th in the world, Peer guarded against losing this match and presented some powerful tennis serves. Peer, whose serve can be deadly accurate, was on the song and saved
nine of ten break points during the match. Her bombardment of tennis aces helped keeping her hopes alive of clinching the sixth WTA title of her career.
As Peer is known for lot many enormously powerful serves, beating the Japanese meant easy business for her. She weathered an early onslaught from hard-hitting Japanese before beating her 6-4 to grab the early advantage in the opener.
Although Fuda gave Peer some trouble in the first frame of their first round match but a little adversity helped the Jerusalemite as she scored four more points than Fuda, winning 60 percent on service, 43 percent on return and
53 percent of points in total.
The 24-year-old Peer was the early aggressor, attacking Fuda’s serve to win an early break and go up 2-0 in the second set. The Japanese world number 302 quickly broke back, however, and reeled off 9 of 16 points on serve to take
the score at 2-all in less than an hour. But the sweet thing did not last long and the Israeli No.1 happened to justify her top billing of world number 24 and closed out the match, winning the second set 6-2, and setting up a clash with the Russian Alla Kudryavtseva.
Peer leads the Russian 1-0 in career head-to-head matches since they last met at the second round of Miami Masters. This is going be their second meeting and the winner will likely meet either Alberta Brianti of Italy or Varvara
Lepchenko of America for a place in the semi-final here at Washington, D.C.
