Shahar Peer gives a harsh reply to Deniz Khazaniuk – Tennis News
Israel’s best tennis player, Shahar Peer, has lambasted her junior compatriot, Deniz Khazaniuk, saying that the teenager is a reason of embarrassment for her country.
Peer and Khazaniuk recently faced each other in the semi-finals of the women’s singles event at the Israel Open in Ramat Hasharon. The experienced player dropped only one game in the entire contest, winning it 6-0, 6-1 and moving
to the title match.
However, some interesting events took place after that. Peer refused to shake hands with Khazaniuk at the end of the encounter. When she was asked the reason of doing that during the post match interview, she replied, "You (Khazaniuk)
are an embarrassment to the State of Israel."
It has been also reported that Peer made a sign to tell her losing rival to keep quiet. When Khazaniuk was asked for her comments on the incident, she stated, “I expected this, and I'm not angry."
The top Israeli player’s actions were in response to the criticism made on her and the other members of Fed Cup team by Khazaniuk some time back.
After Israel’s loss against Portugal in the Fed cup competition, Khazaniuk said that Peer was not really what she portraits. The 18-year-old blamed Peer and her other team mates of always targeting her. She shared that the veteran
player and other players always insulted her.
Khazaniuk said, "She's one big fake. They only belittled me and criticized me all the time. They humiliated me. That is not the way a national team should be handled. It's the way you do things in the neighborhood."
The youngster’s words were taken as a huge insult for her senior player. Peer is regarded as a legend in her country. She is the most successful tennis player, male or female, in the history of Israeli tennis. The 25-year-old has
won five WTA titles, reached quarter-finals of two Grand Slams and attained her career best ranking of number 11.
On the other hand, Khazaniuk is just at the start of her career. The teenager has just been playing ITF events until now, giving her 2012 season’s best performance at the Westende-Middelkerke, inning the title in the end.
