Shahar Peer stuns Aleksandra Wozniak to reach round two – Internationaux de Strasbourg 2012
Israeli number one, Shahar Peer, shocked everyone after shocking the ninth seed, Aleksandra Wozniak, with a bagel at the Internationaux de Strasbourg 2012 on Tuesday. She clobbered a 7-5, 6-0 victory against the Canadian to book a spot in the round of 16
at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event taking place in Strasbourg, France.
Peer required 80 minutes to tumble over the Canadian seed in their fourth outing. She not only avenged her loss at the Budapest WTA event earlier this circuit but also levelled the head-to-head series by 2-2 against Wozniak.
The 25-year-old stormed into this clay court event and drew the first blood in the opening game to take the upper hand. She lost her edge in the fourth game but jumped to a 4-2 lead with another break of serve. Peer then exchanged two serve breaks before
serving out the opener with a 7-5 win.
Ranked 53rd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Peer went out of control in the follow-up set. She blasted powerful forehands and backhands to reel off all six games in a row, eventually pocketing the set with a bagel. The Israeli blocked the lone breakpoint
she faced but capitalised on three out of four break chances to earn the limelight.
All in all, the Jerusalem native jolted down a poor first serve share of 46 per cent as opposed to her rival’s 65 per cent but tremendously marked 19 out of 28 points on it. She also sought 11 break opportunities and sealed the match with 69 points.
She will next face the local wildcard entrant, Alize Cornet, who rallied past Belarusian’s Olga Govortsova in a three set thriller to set-up this duel. The French contender amazingly brushed off nine out of 16 breakpoints she faced and capitalised on seven
out of 19 break chances to formulate a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 success in two hours and 20 minutes.
The sixth seed, Marina Erakovic, also became the casualty of the day. She was edged out by the Japanese star, Ayumi Morita, with a breadstick for the fifth straight time. The Kiwi broke her rival’s serve once but was broken five times, eventually suffering
a 1-6, 3-6 shock in 76 minutes.
