Shahar Peer topples Jill Craybas to reach the last eight - BNP Paribas Katowice Open 2013
Former world number 11, Shahar Peer, sidelined the fellow qualifier, Jill Craybas, in the second round of the BNP Paribas Katowice Open in Poland on Thursday. She registered straight sets triumph 6-1, 6-3 to reach quarter-final
stage of the tournament. It has been a very depressing couple of years for the Israeli tennis ace who has dropped to world number 118 and had to appear in the qualifying stage of the event before making it to the main round.
During the post-match interview at the court, Peer stated, “First of all I'm really happy because every match I'm playing much, much better. From the first round of qualies to first round of main draw was already much better, and
today I played well the whole match, so I'm happy about my performance.”
She further added, “I'm still getting used to the clay but when I play well, I play well. Jill and I both came from the qualifying so we both had a lot of matches. She's a good player with a lot of experience, and I lost to her
a few years ago, so at least this time I won against her.”
Craybas tried her best to deny her opponent from winning a breakpoint in the first game of the match but failed to do so. She survived seven deuces but finally stooped to the 25-year-old Israeli who clubbed the breakthrough with
a scintillating winner down the line. The lead was stretched to 2-0 with the help of a serve hold and the 38-year-old American qualifier was thumped against the wall in the third game that extended the lead to 3-0.
Craybas just managed to break her rival’s serve once in the entire opening set. She couldn’t hold her serve and lost the first phase of the encounter by the end of the seventh game. It was a terrible start for the American veteran
who showed immense courage and guile to disturb the fourth seed German beauty starlet, Julia Goerges, in the opening round.
Peer won a couple of breakpoints in the second set and booked a berth in the last eight of the tournament where she will lock horns against Alexandra Cadantu.
