Shahid Afridi and Waqar Younis asked to appear before ICC Tribunal
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-Afridi-c2482 and coach Waqar Younis have been asked to appear before the ICC’s Anti Corruption Tribunal. The Tribunal will be hearing the case of the three suspended Pakistani players, Mohammad
Asif, Mohammad Amir and Salman Butt, who are accused of spot-fixing.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has issued a statement regarding the matter saying, “Both of them (Afridi and Waqar) will appear before the International Cricket Council (ICC) Tribunal either in person or through teleconference depending on their convenience
and subject to their professional commitments.”
Both Younis and Afridi have already given statements on the spot-fixing issue to the ICC’s Code of Conduct Commission, and will most likely be interrogated further regarding those remarks. Younis’ comments on Amir’s no ball will surely be questioned by the
Tribunal.
The Pakistan coach has been reported to say, “Amir’s no-ball greatly surprised me.” He went on to say that he questioned Amir about the no-ball during the break but before the left arm pacer could answer, Salman Butt stepped in to defend Amir. Younis said,
“Butt interrupted from across the dressing room, saying: 'I told him to do it because the batsman was coming on the front foot. I told him to come forward and bowl him a bouncer.”
Afridi’s remarks are also bound to have a negative impact on the trio’s case. He has said that when he met the players in the hotel room, “they looked guilty.”
The three players were suspended by the ICC in September. Since then, Butt and Amir’s appeal against the preliminary suspension has already been rejected.
Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt, has slammed the Tribunal as being biased against the three players. He has repeatedly insisted that the members of the Tribunal should be independent of the ICC, so that the influence of cricket's governing body on the
case is nullified.
The final hearing is scheduled to take place from the 6-11 January in Doha, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Qatar-c2986. The trio has continuously denied any involvement in spot-fixing. The ICC on the other hand has stated that the case against the disgraced Pakistani players is very strong,
and has promised serious action if any player is found guilty.
