http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-Ali-Khan-c89356 Afridi, the former Pakistan captain, has said that it is about time for him to win matches regularly for the national team, instead of just looking to retain his place in the side.
The 33-year-old cricketer, who was dropped after a poor performance with the ball in the series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 earlier this year, has made a brilliant comeback to the Pakistan team, winning a Player of the Match award in
the first game of the five-match One Day International (ODI) series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 at Guyana.
The Green Shirts were in deep trouble at one stage, having lost five wickets for merely 47 runs on the board. However, Afridi, with the help of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Misbah-ul-Haq-c1972, rescued the innings for Pakistan and helped his team post a competitive
total of 224 runs on the board for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 50 overs.
Boom Boom scored 76 runs off just 55 balls with the help of six boundaries and five towering sixes.
While expressing his views in the post-match presentation ceremony, the all-rounder said that he batted with a lot of freedom because he had immense confidence on Misbah, who played responsibly at the other end.
“I try hard and I back myself and I want to thank people back home,” said Afridi. “It is not time for me to just survive in the team, but to give a lot to the team. It was not easy to survive so I tried to stay positive. Whenever
I got the ball in my zone I went for it. I knew Misbah was at the other end. I knew he would stay till the end, it gave me the confidence to go after it.”
After a brilliant half-century, Afridi picked up seven wickets with the ball after conceding merely 12 runs in his nine overs. The leg-spinner felt that the pitch assisted his style of bowling.
“Oh wow wow wow wow what a pitch it was for me to bowl. I just kept it simple, and it worked,” he added.
The second ODI is going to be played tomorrow at the same venue.
