Shahid Khan overcomes regulatory hurdles to take over Jaguars on Jan 4 next year – NFL News
The last hurdle in the way of Pakistan-born American businessman Shahid Khan’s Jacksonville Jaguars deal was cleared with a unanimous approval by National Football League (NFL) ownership committee on Wednesday and he is now all
set to take over the team from January 04 next year (2012) when the acquisition is declared closed.
All 31 owners of NFL franchise who met on December 14 (2011) with discussion on the deal on their agenda did not ask a single question or made any objection before declaring the deal as approved. No member of the committee objected
to Shahid Khan’s Jaguar acquisition.
"What I want to share with the Jacksonville fans is: Here I am, reporting for duty and ready to serve the fans. Let the fun begin," Khan said at a news briefing after approval of the deal
Khan bought the Jaguars in a deal worth $760 million announced by the side’s outgoing owner Wayne Weaver on November 29 (2011).
The new owner however had to face regulatory approvals before being declared as new owner of the team.
The deal immediately cleared is first hurdle after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced to have endorsed it. It was also given clearance by the NFL Finance Committee in their unanimous voting on December 6. The outgoing owner
Wayne Weaver is a member on the committee.
He has now been given go ahead by the NFL franchises owners. The transfer of the ownership will be completed on January 04 (2012).
Khan has also met with a strong approval from Jaguars fans who in their game before last game welcomed Shahid Khan by wearing T-shirts with slogans ‘Yes We Khan’ inscribed on them. They also donned fake moustache to show their
support to new owner.
The owner again reiterated his assurance to fulfil their fans wishes to keep the Jaguars in the Jacksonville.
"This is a partnership, really, with the fans," Khan said. "I am committed obviously to the rebirth, the reinvigoration, doing whatever it takes to put a winner on the field to make Wayne and the other Jacksonvillians proud."
He is expected to visit Jacksonville this week to discuss hiring of new coach with the outgoing owner Wayne Weaver. Jaguars coach Del Rio had been fired by Weaver on the day he announced the team’s deal.
