http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Iqbal-Qasim-c76980, the chief selector of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is not too impressed by the wicketkeeper/batsman, Shakeel Ansar’s performance in the two-match T20 series against Sri Lanka, played last month.
The 33-year-old made his way to the national team after a superb performance in the Faysal Bank Super 8 T20 Tournament, played earlier this year, including an unbeaten century in the semi-final of the tournament against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peshawar-c832 Panthers at Rawalpindi.
Making his debut against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 at Hambantota, the lanky cricketer was dismissed without opening his account and could not get an opportunity to bat in the second fixture. On top of that, Ansar’s performance behind the stumps was not very impressive,
missing a couple of crucial stumping chances.
As a result, the discarded cricketer from Lahore, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World T20 2012, which will be played in Sri Lanka in September/October.
While talking to Pakpassion, the former player expressed that Kamran was the automatic choice, once he got the clearance from the PCB integrity committee. The chief selector said that Ansar did not look impressive with his glove-work.
“Firstly, the integrity committee has cleared Kamran of any wrongdoing. Secondly, the boy [Shakeel Ansar] who we selected for the T20s in Sri Lanka based on domestic performances; he did not provide a good impression or show a spark to us to make us believe
he could deliver with his performance,” Qasim expressed.
The former cricketer further added that he would have given another chance to Ansar, if the competition was not that significant. The selection committee however, was not prepared to risk an inexperienced cricket in the mega event.
He added, “It’s important to look at the format (and importance) of the upcoming matches against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 and the World Cup tournament. If we did not have a major tournament like the T20 World Cup then perhaps we may very well have selected him.”
The 15-man squad will also take on Australia in the three-match T20 series, to be played in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/United-Arab-Emirates-c3033 (UAE), which will be followed by three One Day Internationals.
