  1. Elizabeth I of England was on the throne when Shakespeare was born. She was Queen from November 17, 1558 until her death on March 24, 1604. William Shakespeare (baptized April 26, 1564 – April 23, 1616) was born 6 years after Elizabeth was crowned Queen of England. Shakespeare died in 1616, when King James I & IV of England and Scotland  (19 June 1566 – 27 March 1625) was on the throne.

Note: Her reign is known as the Elizabethan era, famous above all for the flourishing of English drama, led by playwrights such as William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe, however, Queen Elizabeth never met William Shakespars nor seen any of his plays as portrayed in movies! Shakespeare was not recognized as a famous poet and writer until 60 years after his death.

  2. Elizabeth I was the reigning monarch at the time of William Shakespeare birth in 1564, and James I  was the reigning monarch at the time of Shakespeare's death.

William Shakespeare lived between 1564 and 1616.  Queen Elizabeth I reigned over England and Wales between 1558 and 1603, and James I (and VI of Scotland) reigned over  England, Wales, and Scotland between 1603 and 1625.

  3. Born during the time of Elizabeth I, and died during the reign of James I.

You should have picked that up during the first day you were talking about him in class.

  4. Queen Elizabeth I.

    Born: April 23rd, 1564

    Died: 52 yrs old, 1616
