I have the choice to have half a day to look around Tunis. Some people have not enjoyed the experience for various reasons including being pestered by locals. Shall I bother? What is your experience?

Thanks for any advice

  1. I think that if you were to visit Tunis you would truly enjoy it. It is rich in history, culture, traditions, and it mixed with the new and modern. Here are some things that might appeal to you:

*CARTHAGE -the former capital of the ancient world. There is a museum there that details the history of Carthage, and you can go look around some old ruins.

*THE BARDO MUSEUM -has the world's largest collection of Roman mosaics and other antiquities of interest from Ancient Greece, Carthage and from the Arab period, and it ranks with the Egyptian Museum in Cairo as one of the two great museums of North Africa.

*DAR BEN ABDALLAH -A small but interesting museum within an 18th-century palace in the medina, covering the everyday life of a rich merchant in the Ottoman era.

*ZITOUNA MOSQUE -The largest mosque in Tunisia. This Aghlabite mosque dates back to the 9th century. Modest dress is essential, and non-Muslims can only enter the courtyard, not the mosque itself.

*PORT DE FRANCE -It is comprised of architecture and decoration from many different styles and periods and is believed to stand on the remains of a Roman theater as well as the tenth century palace of Ziadib-Allah II al Aghlab.

*NORTH AFRICA AMERICAN CEMETARY -This is the final resting place for many American soldiers who lost their lives in North Africa during WWII. The grounds are very well kept and it is very peaceful and beautiful. Here are some pictures I took from there:

*SIDI BOU SAID -It is a traditional city known for its use of the traditional blue and white colors. It is essentially a town on a cliff overlooking the bay of Tunis. If you follow the cobblestone street upward into town and get great views of the blue sea and marina. In the centre square is the famous ‘Café des Nattes’, better known as the High Coffee. It is decorated in a traditional Tunisian atmosphere. If you continue your climb up the hill, you can go to the Café Sidi Chaabane which overlooks the Bay of Tunis and offers beautiful views. There are many small streets to wander around, and great places to sit and have a mint tea.

Hope this helps. If I can be of any more help or assistance, please feel free to contact me.
