  1. So all our trash shall be shipped to the Island of St Helen?

  2. A lot of dormant volcanoes have a thriving ecosystem within the craters, so not a good idea. But if it is an active one that will, say, dissolve everything we dump in it then it might be a good idea.

  3. very, very bad

  4. are you serious...bad idea

  5. I've never thought of that before!! Bravo, I think it's a great idea. (Active volacanos though)!!!!

  6. How do you propose on getting it all there?

  7. Bad idea! You can get hurt if you do that!

  8. Bad idea.

  9. Bad idea, compadre...

I worked at a hazardous waste incinerator for about three years, so I know how well a real incinerator works (and they do a very good job at effectively destroying hazardous wastes, rendering them non-hazardous).  One thing to realize, is that with incinerators, there are all sorts of pollution control devices, as well as monitors on the off-gas to verify that the compounds are being effectively destroyed.  On top of that, the residue or "ash" left over from the incineration process is also tested to verify that there are no remaining toxins.  That ash, is then disposed of in a hazardous waste landfill which has an HDPE (high-density poly ethylene) liner, and is surrounded by monitor wells so the groundwater can be monitored for any contaminants.

Oh, and the waste-heat from the incineration process is used to make steam - which was used to power a steam-turbine generator and generate electricity for the facility...

An active volcano on the other hand, has no "secondary containment" system, and there is no off-gas treatment system, nor is there a way to verify that the wastes being dumped into the lava would be effectively destroyed...

Nope.  You really wouldn't want to dump waste - hazardous or non-hazardous - into an active volcano.

  10. Go on then, you can be the first to try it out ok!

  11. nope.... then their would be trash all over when it blows up./

  12. bad idea, when the volcano erupt there will be trash everywhere

  13. 45 years ago a system for burning all the rubbish in Moscow was devised and commissioned. The furnaces were used to heat the whole city.

With todays technology surely this would be possible on a global scale, with each city running it`s own system, hence no landfill and recyclable waste treated in the usual way.

In defence of the emissions from the burning of the rubbish, a coal fired power station, in the same period, emitted less pollutants in one day, than a domestic coal fire.

The answers are there, but are they being suppressed in favour of money making schemes for government and business?

As for the volcano, God help us if it erupts.

  14. its a bad idea, bad for invirment and u might get hert

  15. am inclined to think its a bad idea

mostly because dumping into an active volcano is going to change the balance of its ecosystem, possibly very very negatively

its more important to change our ways and habits  than to look for another way to ignore the real problems and their answers

  16. INTERESTING QUESTION. NEVER HEARD OF THAT ONE BEFORE. THINKING ABOUT IT, IT DOES NOT SOUND COST EFFECTIVE. AND I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT THE STUFF YOU THROW IN ASSUMING IT IS BURNED TURNS INTO.

  17. Never thought of it but that might be a good idea.....

  18. good idea

  19. I believe it would serve a purpose, I would also think that with the extreme temp. that it would act much like a catalytic converter on our modern vehicles. The converter because of extreme heat it generates is what gives the final clean air effect coming out of the tail pipes. I'm saying that we can dump any and everything in it but I believe it could handle a great deal of garbage safely with out causing a great alarm.

  20. Well but who will go so close to the valcano

  21. Bad..

  22. Next time ones about to blow - the job's yours if you want it.

  23. Ones that are still active? No way!

  24. Essentially the volcano can be used as an incinerator.  BUT if you burn garbage, like paper and plastic, then there would be more pollution in the atmosphere.  And therefore more CO2 for climate change and global warming.

But even if we do dump our garbage into volcanoes, specifically metal, though they would melt down, we would still have to mine the metals again.  Meaning more pollution once again.

No, the best way is to find better ways to recycle, alternatives to non-recyclables, or finding ways to recycle non-recyclables.

  25. hmmm that sounds interesting...who is going to volunteer to place it there and pay for transport I wonder

  26. Good or bad at least you are thinking.  There should be a reduction of packaging from the big companies (world wide) who are creating the worst of this trash problem in my opinion.  Ban packaging!! Get a celebrity to get that one started and maybe someone will listen.

  27. The answer is in curbside recycling. Also urban compost centers that utilize mycoremediates to break down and detox the compost thus speeding the composting time. From there we could use this massive amount of readily available fetilizer for urban cropshares and community gardens to provide cheap healthy organic foodstuffs to needy families who would otherwise be dependant on Mickey D's and instant white flour products.Recycling should be mandatory on a federal level. Everything wrong with  America isn't going to be solved by another corporate takeover ,for instance waste management taking all the trash and putting it in volcanoes or outer space. It has to be a major shift in the American consciousness on the whole.WE THE PEOPLE have to chnge our habits. If everyone started recycling there would be no trash company. There would be the recycle man picking up three different cans, and than the compost people picking up biodegradable scraps. Also our instant fast food mindset must be erradicated. If every freakin granola bar you eat in your quest for a green planet has a foil wrapper are you really doing your part? Besides the fact that those things aren't healthy any ways. The  most enlightening ideas I've ever heard are the ideas of the scientists and activists who take part in the Bioneers program. You can get their conferance DVDs on their website. I only watched the 2005 conferance and the ideas could change the world as we know it.

  28. Well, you're thinking.  I've heard of a possibility of dumping waste in places where tectonic plates are colliding.  One plate is moving under another plate.  If waste could be set in such a way that it would flow under a plate it would be gone forever as far as the human race was concerned.
