Question:

Shallowing out the swing plane?

I've always had a problem with having a too steep plan and looking for some drills to help shallow it out a bit.

The problem I'm trying to get away from is comming too far inside to correct the problem. Once I do that, 2 bad things happen, I get the push slice with the open club face or get a bad hook to the left. If I do slice it's the nice push-slice variety with the inside-out swing with an open club face.

My diviots and tees are telling me what my swing is doing. I always, always break my tee, right at the crown, I don't get the sweeping feeling with the driver and often I misses are hit behind the ball into the ground or I get a super high draw to the left, or worse the super high slice to the right.

Anyone know of drills to work on flattening out my place a little bit, that doesn't require me taking my club inside anymore? I really hate the push slice or hook, it's a 50/50 chance of what it's going to be.

  1. Take a normal stance, then widen it with each foot by an inch or two. When you begin your takeaway, move the club straight back away from the ball for about the first foot. Both moves  encourage a similar flatter return plane back into impact. Seriously, it might be that simple.

  2. Thinking you know the problem and knowing the actual problem are generally 2 different things entirely.  Without seeing you actually swing....corrections and drill suggestions will be fruitless.  I suggest a lesson or 2 from a good teaching pro.  He or she will actually be able to observe your swing flaws and offer the specific corrections and drills to fix them.
