Shane Doan staying with Phoenix Coyotes, signs four-year extension -NHL Update
Friday, September 14, 2012, was probably the happiest day for the Phoenix Coyotes so far this hectic offseason as their veteran captain and forward, Shane Doan, decided to stick around and signed a four-year contract extension with the Glendale, Arizona,
based National Hockey League (NHL) franchise.
The main issue that Doan was facing throughout the NHL regular season was that the Phoenix Coyotes could not manage to grab on to someone that would be willing to take over their day to day operations and look after the team’s affairs. In other words, the
Phoenix Coyotes were looking for an owner and with recent reports of prospect owner, Greg Jamison, getting the money ready, needed to purchase the club, Doan could not have been more excited.
"I think I made it clear right from the beginning my whole goal was to come back here ... if I thought there was hope that this could work here then I was going to come back here," Doan said. "In the end, I think there's hope, and that's really what it comes
down to. …
The Phoenix Coyotes made history this past year as they made the Western Conference Finals in the 2012 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in history and also managed to top the Pacific Division, another first as well.
"The last three years are arguably as much fun as I've had in the NHL, and last year in the playoffs was amazing, and I want to do that again," Doan said.
Losing a veteran player like Ray Whitney to the Dallas Stars has definitely hurt the Phoenix Coyotes, but they were afraid to imagine what the situation could have been like if Shane Doan chose the same path and left the desert club for sure after having
spent his entire career there.
The Arizona Republic has reported that the deal is worth $21.2 million, with an annual salary cap hit of $5.3 million and $2 million in bonuses signing money, keeping the player on the club till the 2016 NHL regular season comes to an end, which just might
be retirement time for the veteran.
