Shane Dorian and Bede Durbidge emerge triumphant in Round 2 at Billabong Pipe Masters
Hawaii’s Shane Dorian and Australia’s Bede Durbidge made the Round 3 cut at the Billabong Pipe Masters after walking away with top honours from their respective Round 2 heats that went down at the Banzai Pipeline in Oahu, Hawaii, on Sunday, December 9, 2012.
Dorian got the better of Brazil’s Alejo Muniz in the fourth heat to make his way through into the third round, while removing his rival from the contention for the event title.
The fifth heat saw Brazil’s Ricardo dos Santos failing to hold his own against Durbidge, consequently getting eliminated from the competition while sending his rival through into the next round.
The pumping six-to-eight foot waves breaking at the primary event site served as an ideal stage to determine the fate of both the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour and the 30th anniversary Vans Triple Crown
of Surfing.
With plenty of rewards awaiting the victor, the top surfing talent from around the globe were not keeping their determination to clinch the win hidden from anyone, neither their competitors, nor the massive crowd that was there to catch the action up-close.
Dorian took on Muniz during the fourth heat of Round 2 to try keeping himself alive in the contention for the event title.
The Hawaiian surfer got off to a promising start, showing a great deal of comfort with the conditions that he was way more familiar with than his rival.
As the heat continued, Dorian locked a juicy tube to post an impressive 7.67 on the score-board and went on to add an additional 6.10 point to his account, thus registering a heat-total of 13.77 points.
Muniz responded with a two-wave total of 11.10 points, which comprised of a 6.33 and 4.77-point wave. The effort was not enough to get him ahead of his rival and consequently resulted in his elimination from the competition.
The fifth heat saw Durbidge get the better of Dos Santos, though he was made to work really hard for it.
The Australian surfer found himself a stunning 8.33-point ride to take the lead, which he cemented by backing it up with a 6.27-point wave for a heat-total of 14.60 points.
Dos Santos did not finish too far behind him on the score-board, registering a heat-total of 12.76 points, which included a couple of scores in the six-point range, consequently surrendering the Round 3 spot to his rival.
