West Brom striker Shane Long was shocked after the 2-1 defeat to current champions Manchester City at the Hawthorns, and insists that his side must learn from their mistakes on the day.
The Baggies were undefeated at home before this game, and had enjoyed a fine run in the league, with only one defeat in 7 games.
Playing hosts to the champions always presented a tough, mental and physical challenge. Manchester City were undefeated going into the game, and despite not having made the strongest start to the league, had been very impressive.
West Brom needed a result from the game if they were to keep up their momentum. Striker Shane Long gave the Baggies the lead after City had gone down to 10 men. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/James-Milner-c17706 had been shown a red card in the first half after the midfielder brought down Long,
thus denying a clear goal scoring opportunity.
City were a goal and a man down, but came back in dramatic fashion as substitute Edin Dzeko scored a brace and fired the champions to victory. West Brom lost their first home game of the season, and looked shell shocked as City grabbed the three points.
West Brom will take on Newcastle next in the Premier League, and Long is keeping his head up despite the defeat. The striker believes the team can win against the Magpies if they play the way they did against City, though he did admit that Saturday’s defeat
was hard to fathom.
The Irishman said:
"There is a bit of disbelief at losing because we really took the game to them. The boss has instilled real confidence in us to play against the best teams.”
"We passed it out from the goalkeeper with every chance we got and caused them all sorts of problems and they are probably one of the best teams in Europe.”
"It's very frustrating for us but we will take a lot of positives and we can probably go on to Newcastleand if we do the same things, win the game."
In other news, goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ben-Foster-c7445 accepted complete responsibility for the first goal by City, and revealed his frustration at conceding two goals at home. The player is however optimistic that West Brom will recover and bounce back.
