Shane Lowry starts well at The Irish Open – Golf news
Shane Lowry fired a five-under par 67 in the opening round of The Irish Open to mark a stunning start to his campaign at his home course, on Thursday, June 27, 2013.
Lowry is currently being lauded as one of the favourites to record a victory in the event, as he holds a house on the venue course and certainly knows the playing conditions more than anyone else in the field.
“It would seem like there should be more pressure on me this week, but I'm looking at it as an advantage. I play this course week-in, week-out and know it like the back of my hand,” he said.
“I went to Baltray just happy to be there and would have been happy going home with four rounds under my belt, but obviously I came away with a lot more than that. This week and 2009 is like chalk and cheese. You can say I'm coming here trying to win the
tournament but I'm trying not to talk too much about it,” he added.
Starting on the back nine of the course, he bogeyed the very first hole that he played. However, it did not shatter his confidence and the Irish star made a strong comeback by recording a hat-trick of birdies, starting from the 13th hole.
He then added another shot to his scorecard on the 18th hole, to reach the turn in three under. The back nine of the course witnessed him draining birdie putts on fourth and the eighth hole, which allowed him to finish just one stroke behind the pace set
by Oscar Floren.
Peter Uihlein, a Challenge Tour graduate, was among the other four players who also carded 67s to share the second spot on the leaderboard.
Uihlein is currently enjoying a great form on the European Tour, having recently won the Madeira Islands Open – Portugal – BPI, his first victory on the tour, and is hoping to mount the title charge this week as well. His round-one performance included a
total of seven birdies while conceding two bogeys.
Michael Hoey, Joost Luiten and Jean-Baptiste Gonnet were the other three players who shared the second position entering the second round.
