Shane Lowry to chase OWGR points instead of PGA Tour Q-School
Shane Lowry played some tremendous golf over the course of four days to land in his first title on the European tour title, the Portugal Masters.
The Irishman was due to fly to the States to participate in the PGA Tour Q-School. However, looking at his current form, the world number 74 decided otherwise for the time being.
Nevertheless, this does not mean that Lowry will not been seen in the US for the whole of the next season.
Currently, Shane is ranked 74th in the world and he has decided to improve his world rankings so that he gets an automatic spot in the majors and other big name tournaments, such as WGC events or the Players Championship.
The 25-year-old won his first title as a pro on Sunday, in Portugal. Now, instead of flying to the US to participate in the Q-school, he will be seen playing at BMW Masters in Shanghai.
His victory at the Portugal Masters has also earned him a spot at the WGC-HSBC Champions.
If Lowry can do well in the next two tournaments, then surely his ranking will go up. His immediate task is to get inside the top 50 as soon as possible.
After Sunday’s victory in Portugal, he told the reporters, “I have to see first of all where my world ranking is after today and what tournaments this will get me in for the rest of the year. Probably still will (attempt PGA Tour Q-School). We’ll see from
there”.
By December 31st, the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Rankings will get an invitation to the Masters. So his participation in China makes it all the more important for him to do well.
Obviously it will not be easy, but if he manages to crack inside top 50 in the golf rankings, and stay there for the entire next season, then there is a huge chance that he will be playing in all the WGC events and the majors.
This seems a better option for the Irishman, as playing in the Q-school does not automatically guarantee the tour card.
On the other hand, playing and performing well in China would certainly be better, as he is in good form. Plus there are huge chances for him to climb up the rankings.
