Shane Mosley: Miguel Cotto needs to be faster than he is to beat Mayweather – Boxing News
Shane Mosley, former IBF Lightweight, WBC and WBA (Super) Welterweight champion, has refused to pick a winner between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto for their fight on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mosley has faced both the fighters. Mayweather
had dominated him completely in the ring in 2008, whereas Miguel Cotto had almost lost to him. According to Mosley, Cotto might be able to lead or put up a tough fight in the initial rounds, but from the fifth round onward Mayweather will lead the show.
While stating his point of view, Mosley said, “Miguel Cotto is definitely a hard worker and very strong and I think he’s a little deceptive in the way that he throws his punches. Cotto appears to be slower than he really is. He’s really fast. I believe that
with Mayweather, he has great skills and talent. I think that it’s going to be a tough fight for both guys. The first four or five rounds are going to be interesting, but I think Floyd might take over from there.”
In other words, Mosley is trying to influence Cotto to change his style as he did. Mosley modified his fighting style to a great extent right after he joined the Kronk Gym to train with Emanuel Steward and then with Pedro Diaz who is the current trainer
for Miguel Cotto.
When asked about who will be the winner, Mosley said, “You never can tell. If Floyd doesn’t take Miguel serious, then Miguel can be a good choice in the fight being that he is a natural 154 pounder.”
Shane Mosley will also be present at the MGM Grand as he will take on Saul Alvarez for the undercard fight. According to Mosley, it is important for Mayweather to take Cotto seriously in order to avoid any mishaps. He believes that Cotto has fought on the
weight more than Mayweather, therefore the Puerto Rican’s chances to win the fight are more. It should be noted here that most analysts have rated Cotto as the underdog for the fight but Mosley thinks Mayweather is the underdog.
