Mosley claims Margarito served time, deserves license
Today Sugar Shane Mosley spoke up about the controversy surrounding Antonio Margarito and the revoking of his boxing license last February. At the end of January, Margarito faced off against Mosley and was accused before the fight of trying to compete with loaded gloves. The controversy resulted in Margarito’s immediate ban from the sport.
"I think time has been served, he should get his licence back. The trainer is the one that wraps his hands," Mosley said.
The comments are being perceived as strange by some, since it would have been Mosley who would have suffered the repercussions of Margarito’s illegal attempt. Not only would the fight have been unfair, but fighters have been seriously and even fatally injured in the ring due to plastered hand wraps.
Mosley insisted that ultimately it is the trainer who manages the issue of hand wraps and places them on the fighters hands, so it is he who ought to be held accountable. "I've never said that he didn't know [about the inserts], maybe he did, but I am sure he didn't ask for it,” Mosley clarified. “It was brought to him by his trainer. He is the monster. The bullsh*t I heard, his trainer said was it would protect his hands from getting hurt, and [he] can punch without being afraid of his hands hurting."
In light of the incident Margarito immediately fired his trainer, Javier Capetillo, and claimed that he knew nothing about the loaded hand wraps.
Before the Mosley fight took place, Mosley’s trainer noticed hard inserts in Margarito’s wraps upon inspection in the locker room, and immediately notified a member of the athletic commission.
Mosley’s opinion somewhat mirrors those of Freddie Roach and Emmanuel Steward, both of whom have speculated that ‘planting’ plaster in a fighters’ hand wraps would be possible.
"He probably don't deserve a fight with ‘Pac Man’ right now, but the trainer is the one that knows better,” Mosley concluded.
