Shane Mosley’s relationship with Golden Boy begins to crumble
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has slapped “Sugar” Shane Mosley on the wrist for recent comments suggesting he was a free agent.
Mosley, a three-division world champion, stated recently his contractual obligations had come to a close with Golden Boy, for whom he has fought since 2005. Mosley reported he was excited to be a free agent because it afforded him better prospects to take
on boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao.
“There are fighters at Top Rank that I want to fight and I have to go that route [without Golden Boy involved] to fight them,” Mosley said. “If Golden Boy can't make the fights, then I have to step outside of the box as my own promoter and do it."
Rule number one of Golden Boy: you do not talk about Golden Boy.
Catching wind of the comments, Schaefer said in a boxingscene.com article: “It is a bit disappointing, you know, to read the comments of Shane. I have reached out to him, he has not called me back.”
Mosley, 39, has fought the best of the best under Golden Boy guidance, including the likes of Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto, Ricardo Mayorga and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
While Schaefer refused to go into the specifics of Mosley’s contract to reporters, he closed discussion on an ominous note, saying: “You live and learn. But again, the contractual relationship is something I am not going to discuss. You know, I know Shane
can read so let him and his new manager (James Prince) figure it out."
The “it” here seems to be whether or not Mosley is legitimately a free agent or still contracted to Golden Boy.
It wouldn’t be the first time a fighter has gone public about being a free agent and then finding out a contractual stipulation hadn’t concluded yet.
Just ask sensation Manny Pacquiao, who signed on with Golden Boy in 2006 even while he was contractually obliged to Bob Arum and Top Rank Inc.
