Shane Shillingford suspended due to illegal action
The West Indian cricket team suffered a blow after the action of Shane Shillingford was declared as illegal. Shillingford was amongst the 30 probable players for the World Cup which was announced by the West Indian board.
The tests were conducted in Perth where it was decided that Shillingford was bending his arm more than the allowed limit and as a result, the decision of his suspension followed.
Shillingford was suspected for chucking during the first Test match played against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758. The umpires at that time were Steve Davis and Richard Kettleborough. The umpires also had a doubt over his action when he bowled some deliveries during that match.
There have been a lot of bowlers who have been reported for suspect action in the past and the biggest name of all is of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Muttiah-Muralitharan-c78157. The Sri Lankan off-spinner was reported on many occasions especially when he bowled his doosra. The ICC changed the regulations and allowed the bowlers to bend their arms to 17 degrees. The extension of the arm was up to 15 degrees before the ICC conducted a survey and found many bowlers going beyond the allowed 15 degrees. This forced the ICC to change the decision and give more leniencies to the bowlers.
The suspension doesn’t mean that the career of the bowler is all over. He can apply against the reports within 14 days after receiving the reports on his action. Shillingford can also apply for re-assessment of his action after he has worked on it and improved it.
The West Indian board will be disappointed with the decision as the World Cup is scheduled to be played in the subcontinent and all the teams have tried to name quality spinners in their preliminary squads. The conditions in the subcontinent will not favour the seam bowlers and the West Indian team will now be required to choose other options as they have limited time.
Sulieman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shane-Shillingford-c89689, his selection is almost guaranteed. He has been with the team for the past year and has also proved to be handy with the bat.
