Shane Victorino can solve Detroit Tigers’ outfield problems – MLB Update
Shane Victorino did not have great time on the plate in the last season. The former Los Angeles Dodgers’ outfielder managed to get just 152 hits at 595 at-bats. Overall, Victorino hit .255 with 11 home-runs and 55 RBI’s but stole a career high 29 bases on
45 attempts. Over the course of his career, he is .275 with 90 home-runs and 409 RBI’s.
However, the 31-year-old can prove to be a precious pick for the Detroit Tigers in the outfield as he will be working hard to bounce back in the next season. Shane’s speed and athleticism is what separates him from other outfielders in Major League Baseball
and that is what the Tigers are looking for from both sides of the plate.
Victorino can prove to be a realistic target for the Tigers in 2012 as they work on their weaknesses. In the past, Victorino has been overrated by some. But having failed to live up to the expectations, he could prove to be a steal for some in 2013.
He turns 32 at the end of this month and will be hitting the open market for the first time in his career. However, Victorino’s critics are convinced that he his best days in the Majors are behind him.
Shane is known for his ability to hit against the left handed pitching. He is .301/.373/.508 against lefties over the course of his career. At worst, he could be used as a partner for Andy Dirks and Quintin Berry.
Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland tried several players at the troubled outfield corner last season but things did not work out for him. Although the Tigers will not be looking to make too many changes to their big league roster, they are in need of an efficient
outfielder. Victorino could also be used as the consistent Number 2 hitter that the Tigers have not had since losing Placido Polanco in 2009.
In addition to having decent offensive skills, Victorino can prove to be an asset for the Tigers in the field. It will be interesting see if Leyland and General Manager Dave Dombrowski decide to bring him in for the next season.
