Shane Watson gives the thumbs down to Dilshan’s captaincy: Cricket News
Australian all-rounder Shane Watson thinks that the new Sri Lankan captain Tillakaratne Dilshan is not the ideal man to lead his country at the highest level. The flamboyant Dilshan, who revived his career two years ago after being handed over the opening slot, was named as the national captain after Kumar Sangakkara quit as a skipper following the World Cup final loss to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mumbai-c820 last month.
Dilshan remains a popular choice amongst the cricket fraternity in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 yet Watson thinks that he does not have the credentials that Kumar Sangakkara had. He feels that living up to his standards might be a task beyond Dilshan.
"Kumar Sangakkara is as impressive a cricketer as there is in the world," Watson told the media. "He always handles himself so unbelievably well and he's a brilliant cricketer also. So it's going to be very hard for someone like Dilshan to live up to exactly what Kumar is as a person and also how he's been in the captaincy, it's going to be a big challenge for him."
Sangakkara gave up the job as a skipper because he wanted to pro-long his international career. He is leading the Deccan Chargers in the on-going Indian Premier League.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Watson-c96326 added that his team was already looking forward to the duel with the Sri Lankans which is set to start in the month of August this year.
Watson, who was named Clarke’s deputy for the One Day series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 last month, thinks that the current phase is a big challenge for the Aussies also as they are trying to rebuild and create an exciting era for Australian cricket after the harrowing loss to the English team in the Ashes series last Australian summer.
"There's no doubt the Ashes was there to be a defining moment for people's careers in certain ways, and for some people it has been and others not so much," Watson said. "Now there's a new direction Australian cricket is heading in [and] it's going to be interesting to see what happens over the next year or so”.
Watson was one of the lone success stories of the Ashes mauling in which the English team handed out three innings defeat to the once mighty Australians. The all-rounder failed to score a hundred yet scored valuable fifties at the top of the innings to ensure that his team got off to a good start.
Watson is excited about the prospects of captaincy which is likely to come after Clarke’s reign. If he fails to perform with the bat, Watson is grateful to the governing body of the game in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 who have made him a part of the leadership group. His goal is to make something very special for the game in the country.
Watson is at the peak of his prowess. The century in the second match against Bangladesh last month was a clear testament to his abilities. The right-handed batsman struck a world record 15 sixes on his way to an unbeaten 180 run odd innings. He clearly can be the go-to-man for his country in the years to come and that is what he is aiming to achieve.
