Shane Williams ends his career on a winning note – Rugby News Update
Shane Williams, the 35-year-old Ospreys and Wales winger got a fitting end to a glittering career, as his team won the RaboDirect PRO12 League against rivals Leinster to become Welsh rugby champions.
Williams, who had earlier announced his retirement from club rugby at the end of the season, scored two tries for his team to secure his team’s second title in three years.
At the interval, the Ospreys were trailing the Heineken Cup champions 17-9 and with ten minutes to go they were losing 30-21. However, his team fought back and secured a 30-31 victory over a team they had beaten twice during the regular season.
The head coach of Ospreys, Steve Tandy, was naturally happy with his charges and paid special attention to the never die attitude of his team. When all seemed lost, they gathered the strength for a final surge and emerged victorious.
He said, "I think it is testament to the team - the whole group and backroom staff and everyone involved in the organisation, but especially the team."
Williams who has had an outstanding Welsh career was naturally ecstatic to go out with a victory, happy to add another title to his already burgeoning CV.
"I enjoy success of course like anybody else. The one you remember is the latest one and this for me is a great way for me to finish," admitted the 35-year-old winger. "I am very proud of the fact that I am associated with the Ospreys. We have worked very
hard this season, we have had our ups and downs and there has been a lot of change in the ranks, with a lot of players leaving the region."
Williams was one of the best wingers that the world of rugby had ever seen. He played three World Cups for Wales, in 2003, 2007 and 2011. He made his debut for the national side against France at Millennium Stadium, on February 5, 2000, and played his last
international match a decade later against Australia, at the Millennium Stadium, on December 3, 2011.
