Shane Williams praises Harry Robinson – Rugby News Update
Shane Williams, the 35-year-old recently retired Wales' winger has warned his compatriots, George North and Alex Cuthbert, that the 19-year-old Cardiff Blue winger, Harry Robinson, is going to challenge them for a place in the starting team.
Robinson is a product of the Cardiff Blues' academy and made his Wales debut against the Barbarians last Saturday, wrapping up his debut match with a 50-metre try to romp his country to victory.
Williams who has been the best winger for Wales over the last decade, singled out Robinson for praise following his impressive debut, and interim coach of Wales, Rob Howley had also singled out the teenage winger for admiration before the game.
Wales tours Australia for a three-match test series start on June 9 at Brisbane. They play two other test matches on June 16 at Melbourne and finish off the tour in Sydney on June 23. Williams had represented the Barbarians for the match, having called time
on his career before the turn of the year.
On the match he said, “They had a lot of youngsters playing and were under a little bit of pressure. Harry Robinson, I thought, had a great game."
"He started very well, scored that try and was very busy throughout and full credit to players like himself and Liam and Rhodri and these guys. They came in and played like they've been playing for 10 years."
"So I think that's what the game was about as well, blooding a few youngsters, trying a few players in new positions and, of course, they wanted to win that game.”
Shane said that the young winger works hard and is a different type of player. He also added that his performance would have given him a lot of confidence and it will be good to carry that to Australia.
Williams played 87 times for Wales, making his debut against France at Millennium Stadium, on February 5, 2000, and capped his international career against Australia in 2011, by scoring a try one last time.
