Shane Williams reveals his plans to leave Wales
Shane Williams has given Welsh rugby a much needed boost prior to the Six Nations 2011.
Williams inaudibly slipped into dialogue on Tuesday that this is going to be his final Six Nations and his last year with intercontinental rugby. And from now onwards it will be pure rugby expected from him till he plays, it’s a ‘catch me if you can’ challenge
for opponents and spectators from Shane Williams.
The Welsh wing uncovered that he is on the brink to sign an extension of two years with Ospreys and at the same time prove his mettle in the upcoming Six Nations.
All of this development explains his rapid upturn from a serious shoulder injury and comeback to Wales’s duty, a complete three weeks prior to the most sanguine ballpark figure, after surgery at the end of November.
This will be his swansong at Test level, after affirming this decision, Williams is a man on a mission and doesn’t want to miss a second of the battle.
He is left with only two home games for Six Nations in Cardiff, one against Ireland and the highly anticipated one against England.
Williams stated, “I need to make sure I can be as quick as I possibly can be and keep up with these young guys coming through. I want to make sure I am doing things right, which means I have got to work harder to ensure I maintain those high standards for
myself”.
He hopes to get things done rightly before he says goodbye to the national squad. His shoulder is in perfect condition now and he seems to be at the top of his game and is consistently working out with the best trainers.
He added, “I badly wanted to get fit and be in the Six Nations squad. I could have been missing the first two games of this Six Nations, or I could have been missing it all”.
This development means he will be stepping away from a chance to break the world record of 64 tries in 101 Tests, set by David Campese. Williams has so far scored 53 tries in only 79 Tests including two for British and Irish Lions. Now he stands on the second
position in the all time list of Test tries.
