Shanett wins Southland Derby final for trainer Marc Randle
The Southland Derby concluded on Friday 1st July 2011 with trainer Marc Randle’s Shanett taking home the $55,000 prize. The Derby started off with 88 competitors on 11th
June and was down to a field of 8 for the final.
The final was run between favourite TB's Final Stand and Turbo Lennie from Gloria Dorsey Kennel, Shanett from Robert Thome Kennel, Madison of Ryan Farms Kennel, Jack’s Big Lad of Legg Kennel,
Trouglez, Tazqun and Radio Spirit of Magic City Kennel.
Shanett took the early race as the race broke out and finished ahead of Radio Spirit by 1 ½ lengths in a time of 32.07 seconds. Followed by the Richard Armington-owned Radio Spirit was Michael
Cassidy's Jack's Big Lad.
Tazqun finished fourth while TB's Final Stand was a disappointing fifth. He was expected to win, especially in light of his victory at the Razorback Classic Stakes in May and the fact that
he entered the final with the highest score of the field, 52.
Randle-owned Trouglez followed him and Ed Gardner's Turbo Lennie and Ryan Farms' Madison Square closed the field.
This victory is another feather in Shanett’s cap following her amazing stint at the $10,000 Spring Futurity which she won this May. This brings Shanett’s record up to 17 wins out of 23 starts
at Southland this year.
Earlier on the cards was the Derby Consolation which Keeper Spode, son of Bob’s Skeet and Queenbee Episode won for T And T Kennel. Keeper Spode is owned by Green Smith.
Shanett’s victory made the day for Robert Thorne Kennel and Marc Randle however the day brought sheer disappointment for Gloria Dorsey Kennel as their star, TB’s Final Stand failed to give
a good performance despite putting up great performances throughout the initial rounds of the event.

Spriralling downwards From after winning an impressive ten length victory in the first round to finishing fifth in the final is a definite setback for the hound who did not seem up to the race
at all.
After one month of rigourous racing between 88 greyhounds Shanett has emerged the winner, proving her talent as a racer is far more than mere luck.
