Shanghai Masters 2010: Roger Federer breezes into final
The Swiss tennis maestro, Roger Federer finally avenged his U.S. Open semi-final loss against Novak Djokovic after brushing aside the Serbian to confirm his final berth at the 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters on Saturday. The final
match score was 7-5, 6-4.
The current world number three will now take on Andy Murray in the title battle on Sunday, who had earlier toppled Juan Monaco in two sets to advance into his fourth final of 2010. Roger trails Andy by 5-7 in their head to head
encounters and will definitely try his best to beat the Scott, who had previously outlasted him in the final of the Rogers Cup at Toronto.
The Swiss native, who has so far won a total of sixteen Grand Slam titles in his career, is now bidding for a record equaling eighteenth Masters 1000 trophy. He will be appearing in his fourth Masters 1000 title battle in 2010,
having also won in Cincinnati after getting the better of Mardy Fish whereas he ended as finalist at Madrid.
Federer, who has been playing impressively right from the start of the tournament, broke down Novak’s defence during the second set as he raced to a double break lead at 4-1. The U.S. Open finalist Djokovic bounced back to cut
the deficit to 3-4 however, he couldn’t take his come back any further as Roger held serve to clinch win in one hour and forty two minutes.
Later, while commenting on his victory, Federer said, "I think the first set could have gone either way today. It was really an open battle. I think, for ten minutes he was a bit out of it and I was able to take advantage of that.
I think that cost him the match looking back because, of course, he was playing a bit more relaxed at one point which made him somewhat more dangerous.”
The twenty three year old Novak was also toppled in the final four battle at Shanghai back in 2009, losing out in three sets to the ultimate winner, Nikolay Davydenko. The Serbian, as a result of this loss, has dropped down his
match record to 52-14 on the season. He came into Shanghai after having captured his eighteenth crown, getting past Ferrer in the Beijing final on Monday.
Djokovic, after the match said, “It was a very intensive first set and I didn't use the chances that I had.”
