Shanghai Rolex Masters 2010: Roger Federer and Mischa Zverev advance
The Swiss tennis maestro, Roger Federer exhibited some tremendous play as he outlasted his American opponent, John Isner in two sets at the 2010 Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
It was Federer's first tournament since losing in the semi-final round of this year’s final Grand Slam, the United States Open in New York at the hands of Novak Djokovic from Serbia. The owner of sixteen major crowns broke the American's serve once in both
sets during the clash.
The battle lasted for one hour at Shanghai. Federer’s serve was impressive as he just surrendered twelve points behind his delivery and didn’t face even a single break point. Isner had come to this match after his first round win over Lukasz Kubot in straight
sets while preventing seven match points.
“Today was a really good match because I knew the danger in John Isner. I knew I was in for a tough match with a really difficult draw. I am really happy that I was able to come through and play a match with a lot of energy and variation. A match that was
really solid for a first round after not having played for so long,” said Federer after his victory.
The third-ranked Roger is playing at Shanghai Masters for the first time in his career. He had previously enjoyed tremendous success when the Qi Zhong stadium staged the Tennis Masters Cup from 2005 to 2008. The twenty nine year old had also captured the
year ending Barclays back in 2006 and 2007.
He now is attempting to win his third title of the year after having captured the Australian Open and the Cincinnati title. The right-hander, as a result of this victory, will now meet the world number fifty eight, Andreas Seppi of Italy, who has already
won both of his previous matches at the Shanghai Masters. Seppi first shocked the fourteen seed, Marin Cilic in a two setter clash and then thrashed out Yen Hsun Lu.
In other action, the last season’s winner, Nikolay Davydenko suffered a major blow as he was kicked out by Mischa Zverev, a qualifier from Germany in two sets. The final match score was 6-4, 7-6(3). The sixth seed Nikolay, who had toppled Rafael Nadal in
the title battle back in 2009, lost serve on three occasions as the clash stretched to one hour and forty nine minutes.
The Russian has failed to find his top form since missing three months to injury recently. “I need to be more relaxed, do not think about results so much and just concentrate on the match and play good. Because, when I make a couple of mistakes, I start
to be more nervous”, stated Nikolay .
Meanwhile, the eleventh seed, David Ferrer brushed aside Thomaz Bellucci in a two-setter clash with the final score being 7-6(7), 6-3. The Spaniard, as a result of this victory, added forty five points to his season-to-date ATP Ranking.
