  1. it depends on your lifestyle. But it was more than enough for me when i lived there. But if you go out a lot and eat fancy all the time, that wont be enough. But again, like i said, it depends on your lifestyle. But i've to tell you that Shanghai is an expensive city.

Yes, Shanghai gets snow. There was snow storm last year. It gets really cold in some years but it dosent have snow every year.

Those places you asked are generally less expensive than the US (for the same standard) but western foods are more expensive than chinese (guess that's something you'd have to expect anyway)

  2. A simple rule of thumb for cost of living items in China is that everything is the "same" price as in the USA except in RMB. To simply the calculation, let's use an approximate exchange rate of 7 RMB = US$1. So with $7000, you then have 49000 RMB and wondering how much cost of living items should cost. You just pretend that you have 49000 US$ when you go looking for stuff. If you normally eat $30 meals at restaurants in the US, then you should be able to locate similar food for 30 RMB. If you buy $75 shoes in the US, you should be able to cope with a local Chinese brand item that is also 75 RMB. Don't expect to find that at the western department stores on Nanking Road in Shanghai. Instead, go to the big Walmart-style stores where the Chinese locals shop. Same is roughly true for the cab rides and subway rides. Subway ride 2 RMB. Cab ride = 2 rmb per kilometer. Hotels don't quite follow this rule but close. I stayed at a 125 RMB per night hotel which I found to be adequate but it was only equivalent to a $70 La Quinta. On the other hand while on business, I stayed at a gorgeous place that wanted 880 RMB per night while a similar Ritz Carlton in the US would have gone for only $500 per night. However, you need to subtract shopping items out of this 49000 budget to see if you'll really make it. Shopping items will cost about the same as the US. e.g. a diamond ring there versus here, or a Canon camera there vs here, Nike shoes there versus here. You won't save much or anything when it comes to those items.
