Shannon Bobbitt lays up a buzzer beater as Indiana Fever top Washington Mystics 61-59 – WNBA Recap
On Friday night, Shannon Bobbitt slipped in a floating layup right on the buzzer giving the Indiana Fever a 61-59 victory over the Washington Mystics at Verizon Center.
It was third consecutive victory for the Fever, who are heading both the conferences with a 13-6 record so far in this season. On the other hand, it was fourth straight loss of the Mystics.
Mystics guard Matee Ajavon shed light on the dying moments of the game afterwards, “We tried to keep it out of the hands of the major players, and we did that,” “We got the ball in Shannon's hands. We tried to make her take a tough shot, and she just made it.”
Tamika Catchings had another solid showing for Indiana, leading the team with 16 points on 6 for 12 shooting from the field. The 32-year-old forward also grabbed nine rebounds, dished out five assists and blocked two shots in the victory.
Tammy Sutton-Brown tallied 12 points while Katie Douglas added 10 points, five rebounds and two steals for Fever, who have won three of their previous six games. Jessica Davenport also came off the bench with 10 points, five rebounds and a game best four steals in the victory.
Ajavon punctuated a game high 19 points on a 7 for 19 shooting from the floor. Ajavon also had three rebounds, four assists and two steals in the loss. Crystal Langhorne recorded 17 points, seven boards and three assists for the Mystics, who have lost nine of their previous 10 games.
Indiana shot 48 percent (24 for 50) from the field, including 36.4 from three-point range, and 75 percent (9 for 12) from free throw line. Washington on the other hand shot just 34.3 percent (23 for 67) from the floor, including 20 percent beyond the arc, and 66.7 percent (10 for 15) from line. However, the rebounding of the Mystics was much better as they grabbed 35 rebounds as compared to 29 by Fever.
Fever were the better team in first quarter, taking a four-point lead, 24-20, into the second. Indiana again managed to outdo the Mystics in the second quarter and stretched their lead to six points, 37-31, at the end of first half.
The Mystics bounced right back after the break and in the third quarter, they limited Indiana to just 13 points, cutting the halftime deficit to two, 50-48, heading into the fourth. The Mystics continued to push on in the fourth and tied the game at 59 with 01:39 to go in the game. Both of the teams missed couple of easy shots in the passage that followed until Bobbitt nailed the game decider at death.
