Shannon Brown returning to the Phoenix Suns – NBA News
Shannon Brown re-signs with Phoenix Suns
The Phoenix Suns have agreed to a two year contract with shooting guard Shannon Brown, which will see him returning to the Suns roster in the post Steve Nash era. Mark J. Spears of Yahoo Sports has reported the news. Brown signed a one year deal with the Suns in 2011 after having played two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. He played 59 games for the Suns this past season, having started in 19 of those. Brown averaged 11 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists last season, going 42% from the field. His points and rebounds for the past season were career highs.
Brown will join a roster that has changed considerably from last year. The departure of Steve Nash will considerably change the way the Suns play basketball, but Goran Dragic will be managing point guard responsibilities, while Luis Scola will play as forward for the Suns next season. He was picked up off waivers by the Suns after the Rockets used their amnesty clause on him last week. The Suns roster is shallow at the shooting guard position and the addition of Brown will help them cover that spot.
The Suns will be looking to improve on their performance from last season when the regular season commences in October. They were unable to make it to the playoffs this past season, after which Steve Nash decided to join the Los Angeles Lakers to give himself a chance of winning an NBA championship before he retires.
Pau Gasol selected as flag bearer for the Spanish delegation at Olympics
The Spanish Olympic has announced that basketball team member Pau Gasol will be their flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony of the London Olympics on July 27th. The flag bearer is the person who leads his country’s delegation for the Games out onto the Olympic Stadium floor, while holding the flag of the country in his hand. It is an honour reserved for the best of athletes and is usually awarded to the best athlete of the country. Rafael Nadal was supposed to be the original flag bearer for Spain, but the Tennis star pulled out of the Olympics with an injury.
In his absence, the Spanish Olympic committee chose Gasol to be the flag bearer. Gasol is a two time NBA champion and arguably the best basketball player to have come out of Spain so far. He led his team and country to a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, where they were defeated by the U.S team in the Gold Medal clash. This year again, Spain are set to be the main threat to the U.S team in their attempt for another Gold Medal. Their front court combination of Paul Gasol, Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka is one of the best in the world, and sure to create problems for opposing teams.
“Very happy to be the carrier of the Spanish flag. One of the happiest moments of my career. Thanks Federations and COE!,” said Gasol on his twitter account.
