Shannon Vreeland wins Women’s 200m freestyle heats: Day two – 2012 NC Charlotte UltraSwim

Shannon Vreeland of Athens Bulldog-G won the preliminary rounds of the Women’s 200m freestyle on second day of the 2012 NC Charlotte UltraSwim at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte on Friday, May 11.
With her astounding efforts, Vreeland stifled hopes of her challengers in the four-lap freestyle discipline and tapped the wall for top qualifying position.
She faced tough competition from her strongest challenger, Allison Schmitt in the start of the race but with her utter determination, she outsmarted her over the finishing end for the top position of the event.
The 21-year-old Schmitt completed her first lap of the race in a fastest time of 28.43 seconds. Her immaculate effort was trailed by Vreeland, who stayed 0.32 seconds apart and emerged on the other end of the pool with the timing of 28.75 seconds.
North Baltimore's Schmitt continued her smothering efforts in the second round, where she sustained her spot by clocking a time of 58.80 seconds. Her grueling effort remained 0.17 seconds ahead of Vreeland, who completed her first half of the race by submitting a time of 58.97 seconds.
With her persistent efforts, Schmitt extended her lead to almost half body length in the third lap, as she ended her initial 150 metres of the swim by submitting a time of 1 minute and 29.28 seconds.
Her struggle was trailed by Vreeland, who stayed 0.60 seconds apart and hit the finishing blockade with the timing of 1 minute and 29.88 seconds.
The same continued in final lap, where the crowd witnessed forceful efforts of Vreeland, who surpassed her strongest challenger and reached the finishing end for first position with the timing of 1 minute and 59.64 seconds.
She was followed by Schmitt, who stayed 0.15 seconds apart and posted a time of 1 minute and 59.79 seconds for second position. Third finest qualification spot of the race was secured by Kathryn Hoff of Una T2-FL, who reported a time of 1 minute and 59.93 seconds.
Furthermore, these finalists will race each other in the playoff of the 200m event while the championship will conclude on May 13 after all events.
