Shannon “the Cannon” criticizes Peter
Shannon “the Cannon” Briggs has criticized Samuel Peter for being a “punching bag” in his fight last weekend with unified heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. He vows that he will not supply the training session for his upcoming 16 October bout with
WBC king Vitali Klitschko.
Briggs adamantly denied any comparison between him and Peter, saying: "After two rounds, Samuel Peter became a human punching bag. When I finally get Vitali in that ring, he's going to be up against a determined Shannon Briggs. I'm his size. I'm even more
powerful than he is. He can't keep me away by holding out his left arm and trying to wrap me up like those Klitschkos usually do. Vitali's next fight will be nothing like Wladimir's last fight. He is going to be fighting for his life from the opening bell."
Fair claim or cheap talk?
Hard to say.
Earlier this week Briggs claimed that he already plotted his heavyweight comeback, which will begin with a defeat of Vitali Klitschko, and then surprise WBA heavyweight David Haye or top-rated Alexander Povetkin. From there Briggs will take on Adamek and
promptly retire thereafter.
Fair claim or cheap talk? Probably cheap talk. At this point at least. Shannon “the Cannon” dominating the heavyweight division is about as likely right now as Floyd Mayweather being praised by women’s rights groups.
That isn’t to say Briggs can’t surprise. After all, this is a guy who toppled the legendary George Foreman and beat former champion Ray Mercer. Briggs also shocked in 2006 when he knocked out Sergei Liakhovich in the last round of a WBO title fight. Before
the knockout, Briggs was losing every round on scorecards.
But Liakhovich isn’t a Klitschko, and these guys have dominated the division since Lennox Lewis hung them up in 2003. Then there’s the fact that Vitali Klitschko has never been knocked out, making it a tall order for “the Cannon.”
