Shanshan Feng: From junior golf to fame game
There are plenty of female golfers who are able to qualify as golfing icons, but one of the most charismatic players today is the Chinese Shanshan Feng who has been an inspirational figure
on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour since turning professional — and has let her fans enjoy some of most remarkable golfing moments.
This charming, hard working heartthrob of the LPGA had quite a stunning start in golf, which saw her rise to the occasion, getting her feet wet in a star-studded pro golf.
Glamour and popularity may not be on Feng’s agenda right now as the star golfer is keen on building up her profile by recording victories, but she has unwittingly been drawn to the fame game
lately, thanks to what she did at the 2012 LPGA Championship.
It was more than just a victory, although the LPGA Championship is a major event and usually features the best players from across the world. However, what put Feng in the limelight was her
becoming the first Chinese to record a major triumph.
The victory gave a glimmer of hope to young Chinese wishing to start their golfing career amid growing competition in other Asian countries like South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
During her recent interview to the media, the rising star said that she worked hard throughout the years because she knew that her family was supportive of her aims. Having started hitting
balls at age 10, Feng first got her feet wet in a junior team and soon developed into a talented player capable of impressing fans on the course.
“It's actually funny, though, why I started golf was because when I was little, I was very ill, like I was really white and like weak, and he finally was like, I think you need some kind of
a sport to help you be healthier.  So I tried swimming, I tried tennis, and both didn't work,” Feng said.
“So I tried golf, and I see this is my sport.  So I kept going.  For sure at the end of the evening I couldn't really find too many good coaches in China”.
Feng said that she is thrilled to see that golf is finding a foothold in China, but there is still a lot to be done before the country can be compared with South Korea and Japan. She expressed
her hope that China is going to be the next hot spot in the near future, with a king-sized line-up loaded with star performers.
China has not been able to lure as much new players as South Korea or Japan have been in the recent past, but observers say what Feng has done for her country in the 2012 season, is going
to take China to new heights in women’s golf.
