Shanshan Feng all set for battle at Kuala Lumpur
Chinese Shanshan Feng, who finished tied for the ninth position at the 2011 Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia, is back at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club once again with an aim to do an even
better job at the 2012 edition of the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) tournament.
Feng is one of the rising stars on the LPGA Tour as she recently rose to fame on the back of her maiden major victory at the LPGA Championship 2012, but the battle at Kuala Lumpur is going
to take plenty of hard work and determination if the Chinese star wants to finish at the top of the leaderboard.
Observers have said that last year’s performance was not a downer at all as she finished inside the top 10, but the young prodigy wants to atone for her mistakes this time — and this is what
is motivating her to prove her mettle in Malaysia.
Putting aside what she is likely to do at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2012 this week, Feng has something more important to be thrilled about.
Having become the first Chinese player to win a major battle is Feng’s claim to fame as she is the one who has inspired hundreds of young locals who now wish to make it to professional golf.
China has been a little slower in attracting female golfers as compared to South Korea and Japan, but the recent development caused by Feng’s major success signals a huge rise in the number
of female golfers from the country.
“Golf in China now, it's gotten more and more popular, but it's still just the beginning of it. You know, everybody saw what Na Li's winning at the French Open helped tennis to grow. I'm
not trying to compare myself with Na Li, but of course she's like my idol,” said the LPGA titan who turned professional in 2007.
Recounting how she got where she is right now, Feng said: “I was born in Guangzhou, China. I started golf when I was 10, and it was because my father works for the Golf Association in Guangzhou,
and it started like a junior team, so that was why I started golf”.
