Shanshan Feng grabs early lead at maiden tournament in Dubai
Chinese Shanshan Feng displayed an electrifying performance in the first round of Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2012, as she shot a 66 to share a lead with English Florentyna Parker.
Feng, one of the strongest contenders in the field of four-round LET (Ladies European Tour) tournament, did not let her rivals play with ease as she kept the pressure intact throughout the
first day at Majlis Golf Course, Emirates Golf Club, Dubai.
It was refreshing to see LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) stars unveiling their best skills, but most of the favourites failed to show what they had sworn to before entering the
course on Wednesday.
Feng started the round with confidence as she parred the first two holes. Coming stronger on competitors, she launched her first birdie on the par-5 third hole.
Having parred four holes in a row, Feng once again impressed the spectators on the course as she drained two back-to-back birdies on 8th and 9th hole.
Her performance on the front nine was good enough to keep her going, and she showed almost the same form on the back nine as well.
On the back nine, the Chinese star reeled off three birdies and managed to steer clear of bogeys.
Other star performers included Florentyna Parker, who also registered a 66, keeping pace with Feng.
What is surprising for the fans and spectators in Dubai is that Feng is playing her maiden event of the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters.
Sharing her thoughts about her performance and experience of the prestigious event, Feng said that she is pretty thrilled to see herself playing among top-ranked European players.
The Chinese golfer is also the brand ambassador of Omega—sponsor of the tournament.
“I think it's my first time for this tournament, and it's my sponsor's tournament, so I came with pressure, actually,” said Feng who grabbed her first LET title at the 2012 World Ladies Championship
(individual event) in March this year.
Feng went on to say that the course is suitable to her playing style, but she had to make sure she had full control on her nerve during the round.
“Before the round, I told myself on the driving range, I said, I have to be patient, whether I'm playing well or not and I was patient because I was only one‑under through seven holes”.
