Shanshan Feng wins her first major title at LPGA Championship 2012
Shanshan Feng of China fired a stunning 67 in the final round of the Wegmans LPGA Championship 2012, winning her first major title.
Feng played a balanced game throughout the four days of the prestigious tournament, held at Locust Hill Country Club, New York.
The field at the major event was quite strong, with a number of LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) giants, however, the Chinese prodigy remained strong and held her nerve till the final moments.
Getting off to a decent start, Feng posted a 72 in the opening round and grabbed the 17th spot on the leaderboard.
Due to a tough competition in the first two rounds, the young star had to face trouble posting an impressive score, but made a strong comeback from the third round, registering a 70 in the third round.
Analysts said that the professional golfer was not among the hot favourites for the coveted title, as the field was awash with most of the top-ranked LPGA players. Despite being an underdog, Feng fought back with confidence and carved out her first major
triumph.
The last round ended in a flurry of excitement, with the winner displaying a bogey-free performance.
The Chinese star kicked off the concluding round in an impressive style, as she shot a birdie on the par-4 2nd hole.
She then parred three holes in a row and drained her second birdie. On the back nine, she posted two birdies on the par-4 12th and the par-5 17th.
Golf commentators said that the 22-year-old star has reflected that she can trouble big players, despite having some flaws in her putting.
Speaking to the media about her performance, Feng said she is glad that she was able to beat top-ranked players.
“I would say first of all I'm really, really, happy that I won the tournament. I still can't believe it. I think after this week it's going to give me a lot more confidence,” the young golfer said.
“I believe I can win again in the future. And hopefully it's going to help golf in China because I want to be Li Na for golf in China. I want to be like a model that the other juniors can follow my steps and get on the LPGA”.
