Shao Chieh Cheng stuns Wang Shixian in second round of the Indonesia Open Premier Super Series
Chinese Taipei’s Shao Chieh Cheng made the biggest upset of the day by defeating the World Number One, Wang Shixian of China, in the Women’s Singles second round of the Indonesia Open Premier Super Series 2011, on Thursday, June 22, 2011.
The World Number Nine shuttler, Shao Chieh, showed great improvement in her skills as she displayed well-planned badminton against the Chinese, who was the top seed in the Women’s Singles draw of the event. The Taipei shuttler took only 33 minutes to destroy
the hopes of Shixian to win the title in this Premier Super Series event.
On paper, Shixian was the favourite for this match as she is considered to be a complete player in the world of badminton. However, her hopes of winning the title went in smoke when she received severe treatment from Shao Chieh, who won the match in straight
games.
In the opening set, Shao Chieh managed her dominance in the game by pushing her opponent in all corners of the court. Shixian failed to find good flow in her strokes, as her rival was playing with great precision.
Shao Chieh spared no opportunity for her challenger to comeback in the game at any stage of the set. The crowd went crazy with the winning smashes by the Taipei’s aggressive shuttler, who finished the first game in convincing manner with a 21-15 margin,
in just 16 minutes.
The following set also saw a superb display of quality badminton from Shao Chieh, as she dictated the pace of the rallies to make her opponent work hard in earning points. Shixian was lacking the finishing touch in her smashes, as she was not hitting the
bird in the right angle due to its speed.
Shao Chieh maintained her pace throughout the game by playing an attacking game. Her smashes pushed Shixian on the back foot. The Taipei lady grabbed the second game in 17 minutes with a difference of 4 points with a 21-17 margin. Shao Chieh finished the
straight-set fight by an impressive score of 21-15 and 21-17.
