Shao Chieh Cheng topples Pi Hongyan to lift Women’s Singles title at the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix
Chinese Taipei’s ace shuttler, Shao Chieh Cheng, won the Women’s Singles title as she toppled France’s Pi Hongyan in the final battle of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix, in Richmond DC, Canada, on Sunday, July 24.
The top seed, Shao Chieh, who is also enjoying Number Eight position in the Women’s Singles world rankings, played terrific badminton and tamed the second seed, Hongyan, in a straight-set fight which ended in 34 minutes.
The Taipei shuttler played attacking badminton in the first part of the opening set and remained successful in earning a strong position by reaching at 11-8. Hongyan struggled hard to return the powerful and accurate strokes of her opponent, as she was trailing
behind in the first-half.
After the break, the top seed continued her planned game and stretched the difference. Hongyan accelerated her speed to reduce the deficit, but it was too late as her challenger entered into the concluding points by going miles ahead on the score board.
She ended the first game with a six-point margin of 21-15, in 20 minutes.
In the following game, the French changed her tactics from the starting points but she completely failed to employ her strokes effectively as her rival was quicker in picking the bird from every corner of the court. Shao Chieh played positive badminton by
executing powerful strokes, which landed in the perfect areas of her opponent’s court.
Hongyan failed to find a way out of the planned game of her challenger and consequently, she started to play hasty strokes and threw away many negative points. Shao Chieh remained quite composed and built a superb lead of 11-5 at the interval.
After the break, the Taipei shuttler wasted no time and played with the same high speed throughout the set. Her perfect play in all areas of the court was just incredible, as she made no mistake in the second game and won it in just 14 minutes, with a 21-15
and 21-11 margin. The final result of this Women’s Singles final battle was 21-15 and 21-11.
