Shaquille O'Neal kills rumours; Says not interested in Orlando Magic General Manager Position – NBA News
Shaquille O'Neal took no time to come out and silence all the rumours about him being in the running for the General Manager job at the Orlando Magic.
The post is currently vacant after former General Manager Otis Smith and the franchise mutually decided to part ways. The All Star center and TNT analyst issued a statement yesterday denying that he was interested in the position.
“When I first heard about the vacancy for the Orlando Magic general manager position, I was clearly intrigued. I was drafted by the Magic, I have a great love for the franchise, and I have made the city of Orlando my home. Additionally,
I have great admiration and respect for the DeVos family. However, this is not a job I have an interest in pursuing. I feel very fortunate to be with TNT and to have the best job in sports. I look forward to many more years with Charles, Kenny and E.J.
I wish the best for the Magic and I am confident that they will select a great GM and coach” said Shaq in the statement issued yesterday.
ESPN The Magazine’s Chris Broussard reported earlier in the week that Shaq was interested in the position and Shaq was going to have a meeting with the team management as early as next week.
His partner on TNT’s “Inside The NBA” and former All Star Charles Barkley came on the Dan Patrick Show and said that Shaq had mentioned to him he was in fact interested in the position and would be interviewing with the management
in the near future.
However, the statement issued by Shaq finishes all rumours that may have been circulating. Shaq started his career with the Orlando Magic in 1992 and led them to the Eastern Conference Finals in 1995. Even after moving to L.A,
Shaq still kept his home in Orlando and to this day, he has made Orlando his home.
Despite the fact that Shaq and Dwight Howard of the Magic exchanged some words over his use of the word “superman” for himself that Shaq said he introduced to the NBA, they are said to have a good friendship, which was believed
to be one of the reasons Shaq was considered for the job.
