Sharapova----short stint as #1...again...a return?

Ok so most know I cant stand her, and seems many French citizens dont either, after booing her off the court in her most recent loss. However, feelings aside, I cant help but think, that when I continue to say she is over rated in all aspects, well, that perhaps I am right, despite her fans trying to argue the fact. Ok, so she is one of the more consistent players on tour, that I give her, but she actually doesnt win as many tournaments, big matches, finals, as many think she does. Plus she was number one once before, for what, two weeks, and now for one week cause of Henins retirement. She has yet to show she is clearly the number one player or will be, on tour. Do you think she can be number one and actually prove it, and hold that spot, and why/why not?

  1. Can you judge her objectively or do you dislike her because of personal reason? First of all she was #1 because Justine Henin retired, was that her fault? Ana Ivanovic is the new #1. Who deserve the #1 ranking more? Ana, who never won a Grandslam or Maria who won 3 Grandslam already? She is not a clay court player, that's all. She beat Ana at the Australian Open. Let look at the top four women: Maria ( 3 Grand Slams), Ana (0 Slam), Jelena ( 0 Slam), Svetlana ( 2 Slams). Now you tell me who is better? The French are unfair when they booed her. What did she does, she gave her all in that match against Safina, more than I can say for Svetlana Kutnezkuva, who just gave up against Safina today.

  2. I agree with your post. I didn't expect her to win or make it to the semis anyways.

  3. yes! she will comeback.. now that's its grass season already... one of her best surfaces!!!!

  4. I think Sharapova has already proven that she is a No.1 player. She doesn't win that much tournaments because she doesn't play much. Other girls in the top 10 (aside from the Williams) cannot catch Sharapova's points even entering every tournaments they can. I cannot see any current women tennis player in the top 10 (aside from the Williams, yet again) who deserves the top spot than Sharapova does. I'm pretty sure Sharapova would go much furthur in Roland Garros if Safina wasn't waiting in the fourth round, who is the eventual finalist and/or winner.

Grass court season is very short so Sharapova won't earn that much points. The points between the top 4 are very close, I really think she can take back the top spot after Wimbledon.

  5. Well, clearly rankings aint worth c**p.U can get to no.1 without winning a grandslam.Ivanovic is now no.1 whether she wins the french open or not.But Sharapova(im not a fan) already have 3 slams at just 21 and she already been no.1(even though she ddn't 'earn' the recent one).

Serena proved u can be 'an alledged' has-been and still win a slam.(smile all the way to the bank).Venus proved it too(beating her own record even).

    Sharapova's career has just started.

  6. Sharapova is good, she wins some tournaments and beats the c**p out of some players, but not to be #1.

I don't think she is as good as she thinks she, or as her fans think she is. And I don't know why people had her as the favourite to win the French, I didn't even consider her as a real contender.

On hard court and grass she is good, power and faster playing helps her, So expect her to do better next few months, although I hope she loses.

  7. No, the competition is getting too stiff and she expends too much energy on the court.  The Serbs and the other Russians are more 'hungry'.

  8. "but she actually doesnt win as many tournaments, big matches, finals, as many think she does"

That's what you said.. but do you actually know how many tournaments she plays a year compared to the other players in the top 5.. or even top 10 to keep her points? How can she keep her ranking so high even though she doesn't play that much?

It's true that she's still very far from the real greats of the game... but i don't think you can discount her in any way anymore...

Out of tens and hundreds of tennis players... to be able to win a slam.. or even a higher tier event..(?) I don't think you can say "overrated" in any case, for any player

As for the ranking.. she doesn't have to prove anything to be number 1.. she's been there. After all.. the rankings are just numbers.. you could be #2 but be dominating the #1 player.. heck you could be ranked in the 100's and still win big.. What she has to do is play and win.. and the rankings come..

  9. Sharapova doesn't have to prove anything. She's won two majors and she's still young. She'll win more. I don't think she cares about being number 1 as much as she cares about winning slams.

  10. Sharapova doesn't need to prove anything to anybody.  She's already been ranked #1, and if that was ever a career goal of hers, then she's already achieved it, on several different occasions.  She's even said the ranking doesn't ultimately matter to her, only the titles, and as long as she gives it her best effort, then the ranking will take care of itself.  That's the only thing any player can do really, to give 100% on the court.
