Shared internet connection between pc and laptop?

my dad has a pc that he uses in the basement. he has an ethernet cable running from his router into his desktop obviously. my question is, if i were to buy a laptop, and being in another room upstairs, could he share his internet connection with me via wireless technology? please explain how i would do this please.

  1. Yes. All you have to do is get an adapter that is compatible with both your computer, and your dads router. You can also get an internet card from a place like walmart.


  2. If it's a wireless router then you can do it straight away... if not you have a few choices:

    1. Buy a wireless access point (or a new, wireless router).

    2. Both buy wireless network cards/wireless usb dongles and set up Internet Connection Sharing on your dad's PC, however, this method will require your dad's PC being on whenever you want to use the internet.

  3. Are you sure your dad is using a router and not going straight to the modem? The easiest thing to do is get a wireless router for about $50 and just replace your dad's router with it. 99 out of 100 laptops you buy nowadays will have wireless built in, but just make sure to ask the salesperson before you buy it.

  4. Most new laptops come with a wireless card already in them and basically all you'd have to do is once you get the computer and turn on the wireless card and as long as you know what your dad named the network and if he's got a password on it you should be able to connect instantly
