Question:

Sharing Internet?

I have two Windows Vista. One is a laptop, and the other is a desktop. I have a router connecting the one end of the internet cable to my desktop cpu. And the other end to the routers LAN #1. Then, I have the other cable that comes along with the router (don't know what it's called), connecting the router directly to the internet. I have access to the internet in my desktop cpu, but not in my laptop? I already tried connecting the wireless internet to my laptop, and it says connected, but once I try the internet out...I'm not! So what should I do. Or what do I need. HHELLLPP!

  1. 1. Do you have a password (WEP or other) for security on your wireless? If so, make sure you use the same password on the laptop, or it will connect to the router but you won't be able to access anything.

    2. If you go to "network neighborhood" can you see the desktop computer? ( I assume they are both in the same work group).

    3. If you plug the cable from the desktop into the laptop, can you get to the internet from the laptop?

    4. What type of router do you have? Did you do any configuration to it?  Are you using DHCP?

On each machine, open a command prompt (Start -> Run and type cmd). Then in the black command prompt window type "ipconfig" (without the quotes). Check your IPv4 address and see if the addresses are the same except for that last node of the 4 node number. For example 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101  (where the 100 and 101 can be any value). If they are not the same values in the first 3 nodes of then you are probably not connected to the router properly or the router is not configured properly.
