Sharing Wireless Connection?

I just moved in with my roommate a week ago and I'm having trouble getting onto the internet. She gave me her access code and my computer can read and connect to the wireless signal, but when I open a firefox or an explorer they aren't capable of connecting to the internet. What should I do?

Thanks

  1. Try connecting to other networks. On that window you will see the type of connection that you have with your room-mates access point. Make sure it says connected to the internet.

  2. These steps are for Windows XP Service Pack 2:

In the Control Panel, Under Network Connections.

For each network connection listed, check the following:

            1. Right-click a connection, and choose "Properties"

            2. Click on the "Advanced" tab

            3. If the "Internet Connection Sharing" section is present below the "Windows Firewall" settings, make sure "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" is unchecked.

            4. If the window below "WIndows Firewall" is blank, this means ICS is not disabled and cannot be enabled.

            5. Remember to check each network connection listed in Control Panel.

    In Windows Vista (source[2]):

        1. Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, clicking Network and Sharing Center, and then clicking Manage network connections.

        2. Right-click the shared connection, and then click Properties. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

        3. Click the Sharing tab, clear the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box, and then click OK.

  3. Make sure you have actually created the connection first. Use the Add New Connection Wizard in Network Connections. Also, make sure your wireless connection has an IP address and Subnet Mask via Command Prompt. Type in ipconfig to check.

  4. Double check, make sure you are putting in the correct access code, as it is very sensitive.

  5. make sure it set for the amount of computers you have. Some routers defaults are 3 and some people have 4 computers. All you have to do is change it.
