Question:

Sharing a room Whats a good Material to use as a wall?

I am going to be sharing a room in an apt. I like my privacy and my friend does to so I am going to get a few 2x4's cut them in half and put door hinges on them so they can stand securely from the floor to the ceiling. This will give me good beams but I need some kind of cheap thick material to create the actual wall with. (it will stretch from beam to beam and would prefer something that looks good)

  1. Buy some cheap doors instead of 2x4s;

    Hinge them together and you have a wall that will stand alone without using 2x4s

    If you decide to go with the 2x4s about the strongest material (fabric) you can use is canvas.

    Look in the phone book or on line for canvas or tent material

  2. Installing a wall sounds like the surest way to lose your deposit!!

    Landlords don't want any home-made, jury-rigged, do-it-yourself project in their apartments.

    If you need so much privacy, get a larger place with another bedroom.

    Additionally, doing this could be violating building and fire codes.  Abandon this idea.

  3. maybe some canvas or thick furniture upholstery material... just make sure you poke a little hole in it so you can spy on your rooommate...just kidding.
