Sharks' flanker Keegan Daniel banned for two weeks after dangerous tackle – Rugby news
The injury struck Sharks have suffered another blow as their first choice flanker, Keegan Daniel, got a two-week suspension. Daniel made a dangerous tackle during Sharks last weekend game against the Brumbies and was cited for the violation.
Sharks hosted the Brumbies for their round 12 encounter of the Super Rugby championships May 7th. Sharks handed over a 34 – 16 defeat to the ACT Brumbies as they kept the visitors scoreless during the second-half of the game, played at Kings
Park on Saturday.
However, Keegan Daniel did not get any call from the on field referee, Mark Lawrence of South Africa, during the game. The SANZAR citing commissioner cited the tackle and called Daniel in for a Judicial Hearing on Monday May 9, 2011 at 12:00 hrs.
26-year-old Sharks flanker was cited for a late and dangerous tackle on ACT Brumbies centre Christian Lealiifano during their last weekend game at Durban. Citing commissioner charged Keegan Daniel tackle as a direct violation of IRB Law 10.4 (e) that relates
to late and dangerous tackles.
The law prohibits the player from intentional or non-intentional try or tackle around the opponent’s neck or head region. Any tackle nearing this region is strictly termed as the dangerous.
On Monday, May 9, Keegan Daniel appeared before the SANZAR judicial hearing chaired by Jannie Lubbe at Durban. Lubbe upheld the citing complaint made by the citing commissioner. In a statement released by SANZAR officials, the Judicial Officer has found
Daniel tackle on the Brumbies centre against the standard playing procedures of the International Rugby Unions rules and regulations.
The Judicial officer has found Daniel guilty of foul play that could very well end up in a very dangerous tackle. IRB maintains a very strict policy on the dangerous tackle and Lubbe reiterated the zero tolerance policy for the high or dangerous tackles
particularly near the neck and head region.
Daniel made his super rugby debut for Sharks in 2006. He so far has played more than 120 games for them. Sharks are enjoying a bye this week and will take on the Bulls during the round 14 encounter of Super XV.
Daniel’s two-week suspension has ruled him out of the Bulls clash at Kings Park. The Sharks currently are at the 7th place in the Super XV combined table and have eight-point lead over the South African derby Bulls.
