Sharks seek All Blacks Ma’a Nonu for next Super Rugby campaign – Rugby update
The South African Super Rugby franchise Sharks is looking to include the All Blacks’ star player, Ma’a Nonu, in their squad after he was sacked by the Hurricanes’ coach Mark Hammett from the club for the upcoming season.
The star player was excluded from the Hurricanes side along with Andrew h**e on June 7 due their inconsistent performance in the ongoing championship. The Hurricanes coach showed the pair the door in order to include more youngsters in the side.
Ma’a Nonu had expressed his disappointment over the unexpected decision by the Hurricanes and said that he wanted to carry on with the conference with who he has played more than 100 Super Rugby games. Despite his less than spectacular performance, the veteran
Nonu has been considered by other Super Rugby conferences within New Zealand and overseas.
Teams including Highlanders, Blues and Chiefs from New Zealand and Sharks from South Africa are willing to retain Nonu’s services for the upcoming stalls of Super Rugby.
Talking to media on June 20, John Plumtree expressed his desire to include Nonu in his team. Plumtree said that, "He would fit right into my group very nicely. We haven't had a discussion about it yet but who knows, maybe I will catch up with him while I'm
in New Zealand."
The Hurricanes have put themselves in troubled waters by sacking the seasoned pair from their side. Other senior campaigners like Piri Weepu Aaron Cruden are feeling insecure with the derby and are pondering their various options. Weepu may be the first
one to step away from the Hurricanes after the end of current season.
Talking to reporters, Weepu said, “I've been trying to talk to my mum and dad these last two weeks after what's happened and see what their thoughts are. I got a bit of growling from my mother because they've been waiting for me to talk to them. But it's
never going to be a huge factor in me making my decision to stay. Some of the boys are waiting.”
The Sharks coach John Plumtree is hopeful that he can hire Ma’a Nonu for his club in the next season of Super Rugby championship.
