Sharks sign former Leeds Carnegie scrum-half Scott Mathie – Rugby Union news
Sales Sharks confirmed today the signing of Leeds Carnegie scrum half, Scott Mathie, for their campaign next season. Mathie is the 16th player signed by the Edgeley Park after their poor performance in the 2010/11 Aviva Premiership season.
Leeds Carnegie, this year’s Premiership drop-out is finding it hard to retain their high calibre players after their relegation. The flight of players from Leeds has made their comeback to Aviva even more difficult. Even more worrisome is the fact that the
players like Scott Mathie and Hendre Fourie are parting way with the club after having been involved with the club for the past two to three years.
The 28-year-old Mathie started his rugby career in South Africa where he made his professional senior rugby debut for the Natal Sharks. He represented the Natal Sharks in Super Rugby championship and played for the provincial side in the Currie Cup.
Dorn in Durban, Mathie joined the Blue Bulls and made 16 appearances for them, He later returned to the Sharks. He has played with the likes of Ruan Pienaar and Rory Kockott during his first few seasons at Sharks. Mathie has made a total of 42 appearances
for Sharks in Super Rugby competitions and 12 appearances for the Sharks provincial side in Currie Cup.
The scrum half joined the Leeds Carnegie during the 2008/09 season and remained with them until the end of the 2010/11 season. He has made 90 appearances for Leeds including the 22 appearances in the 2010/11 season in which he failed to score a point during
the whole season.
Sale Sharks’ Executive director of Sport, Steve Diamond, has welcomed the signing of Mathie and termed his signing as a significant achievement. He said, “Scott is another significant signing as we build a squad ready for the challenges ahead.”
Steve Diamond further added that with his impressive performance and display of skills, Scott has impressed him during Leeds home game against the Sales Sharks at Edgeley Park in March 2011. Diamond has wished that Mathie would repeat the same in the upcoming
season to help Sharks to improve their standings in the premiership table.
Scott is 5ft 11 ins. tall, and weighs 13st 4 lbs will join his former Leeds team-mates Luther Burrell and Kearnan Myall as they already have left the headingley based Leeds Carnegie to switch to the Sharks.
