  1. This can totally destroy your edge. Don’t do it. Get trained by people who know or find a pro. I once had a WW2 Japanese military issue Katana. My stepfather decided he’d do me a favor and have it sharpened by a butcher…  I’m sure you can imagine what came home. Completely trashed. Nothing against butchers, I’m sure if he’d known anything about it he wouldn’t have done it. But I’m down one small piece of history.

  2. Two preliminary questions:

    1. Is it SAFE to have a sharp sword in your household?

    2. Is it LEGAL to have a sharp sword in your state?

In addition to your putting an inferior edge onto the blade compared to a professional, a slip of the fingers may ruin the mirror finish on your blade.

  3. not nearly as sharp as it would be if a professional sharpened it. especially if it's a really good sword, and not some crapper from awma made from 440 stainless steel.

  4. If you have no sword experience, you should train with both a bokken and shinai.   The essential thing  is to develop the skills.

A good metal sword is expensive and it is not a toy.  Consider whether you really need a sharp sword.  A good sword should be treated with respect.  Once you have the skill, you can have a sword sharpened so that you can cut bamboo (as used in training).  You should also work with the sword weekly to keep it sharp and free of rust.

Some martial arts suppliers sell "sword sharpening kits"  --  you may consider ordering something like that from Asian World of Martial Arts or Century Martial Arts.

  5. i say have a professional do it u dont wanna emss up the blade by mistake
